If you want to spend the day in town you can visit the museums, the old churches, or go around the town and see some of the statues of the most important people for Chamonix like Horace Bénédict de Saussure or Michel-Gabriel Paccard. You can also go in day-trips in the villages around or in the other resorts from the valley or why not you can venture all the way to Geneva or Annecy , bigger cities relatively close to Chamonix.
There are several museums you can visit and some of them have discounted or free entrance with the Guest Card. Depending on what interests you most or how many museums you feel like visiting you can choose from the Alpine Museum in Chamonix or other museum in the valley. There is a Musée Montagnard et Rural in Les Houches, a Musée de Barberine in Vallorcine, and a Musée du Haut Val d'Arly in Megève. Most of the museum will tell you a lot of interesting things about the Savoyards and their lifestyle, about the valley and its history, or the making of the cheese.
Several festivals and events are organized throughout the year, thus there will most probably be something going one while you are there. Depending on when you visit the resort you have the chance to see and even take part in some of the events organized like for example car racing on ice or slalom race. You can also go shopping in one of the almost 300 available stores in town or if that is not enough you can visit the near by villages and resorts. For those of you who do not like very crowded places there is a municipal library with over 70,000 available documents and an exhibition centre called the Tairraz Exhibition Centre which exhibits the work of several photographers.
